Spring Is the Season For an Automobile Check-up
With beautiful warm weather ahead and summer road trips not far behind, make sure your car is in optimal shape before you head off on your much needed vacation. There's no better time for for an automotive check-up that can save you money and frustration down the road.
First, start under the hood.
Begin with the engine oil and filter if you haven't changed it in a while and make certain to use a quality filter when you do. Refer to your owners manual for the suggested interval. Next, inspect cooling system hoses for leaks and drive belts for cracks. Remember to have your antifreeze tested. This critical fluid prevents your system from overheating in the in the summer heat.
Check the condition of your air filter. Winter dirt, salt and debris can clog your air filter and can hinder your car's performance. Also, check your owner’s manual for suggested service intervals for fuel and transmission filters.
How are your shocks and struts? A unforgiving season of banging over potholes and ruts can have an critical affect on ride quality and vehicle stability. Your dealer can quickly determine if your shocks and struts need replacement. While your there, have your local mechanic perform a complete engine tune-up if necessary.
How’s your battery? Many car owners assume that battery problems disappear with the spring warmth. However, high summer conditions can actually be as difficult on a battery as sub-zero temperatures. Your mechanic has the tools to check the condition of your battery and advise if a new battery if needed. As a rule of thumb, consider changing your battery after four years.
Last but not least, check the the shape of your tires and your tire pressure. The extremes of winter cold and rough roads can severely affect them and cause problems. Having the proper tire pressure will maximize your gas mileage and save wear & tear on your tires and save your wallet! Tires that are underinflated by just a pound or two can actually cut your fuel economy. Do you know if they were damaged this past season? Is there anything visibly wrong like cuts or bulges in the side walls? If so, get them checked them right away and replace if needed.
In addition to the items listed above, springtime is also a good time to inspect your brakes, exhaust systems, lights, and much more. These areas can go neglected over the winter months and can present safety or convenience issues. Now is the time to take care and maintain these critical parts and systems before you hit the road this summer.
